Creativity for Today: A Rainy Day Project

For the most part July has been a string of sweltering, sunny days but there have been a few rainy days thrown in the mix. So when the rained poured down keeping us from the pool and under the roof, we decided to embrace our inner tourists with a little project.

I have a lot of random supplies in my studio. It's a necessity when you are a mixed media artist. You never know what you might need. My grandmother-in-law had given me some wooden thread spools. I picked up a set of old Bingo pieces at a garage sale that included the black and red marker coins. I bought the circle shapes through Woodworks Ltd. for a Christmas craft last year and for Arden's birthday present. And chunks of wood seem to multiply like rabbits around here so we had plenty from which to pick.

With a little wood glue, a brown paper bag work surface and a set of clamps both kiddos created their own masterpiece (with a little guidance), each with a slightly different design, one just a bit smaller than the other. For the most part I would hold the pieces in place and count to 30 to get them to adhere well. We only used the clamps briefly while I wiped up the excess glue using a wet paper towel and a toothpick.

Twenty minutes later their creative attention spans had worn out and we had something new with which to play.

I thought it would be fun to create a photo contact sheet to print off the computer so that they could draw pictures of the things they were photographing. We didn't get to that part yet. Maybe on the next rainy day...
