My recently turned five-year-old made a silly statement using the word hypothesis. I asked him, "What does hypothesis mean?" He answered, "An idea you can test." (Thank you, public television.) As I was starting to think about how incredibly smart my little boy was, he said, "What's an idea?"

As I went to feed the dog tonight I was looking out to the deck and noticed a weird silhouette on one of my bird feeders. I flipped on the light and saw what appeared to be a gigantic mouse eating away at the seed. I knew it wasn't really a mouse and when my dog walked by the window it launched from the feeder to the nearest tree (which is about 20 feet away). I immediately Googled "flying squirrel." Sure enough. I had a flying squirrel on my deck. Yeah, I didn't know those things existed around here either.
